I was still just praying to god that it was some terrible misunderstanding. As someone who has experienced depression throughout my teens and twenties, Mac had been an artist I has leant on for a bit of comfort when times felt dark. There was already a number of news accounts reporting the rappers death. I was in shock… It freaking was true. I don’t even believe in a god but i believe in the presence of others and i believe that they’re watching me and feel what i feel and see what i’m going through but it feels like they know the pain in my heart, truly, feel it, the pain i can’t move on from, this fear of the future and the. My initial response was that it must of been some kind of horrible accident, but I soon found out that it was an apparent overdose that had killed him. He would think about how he was being portrayed in the media, and he’s worry how he’d be remembered if he died. Making music when you’re depressed is great therapy, but I wanted this album to be in a different headspace.”The result of his new found inner peace was his album ‘GO:OD AM’ which had a much more upbeat feel.During this interview with Billboard, Mac said that before GO:OD AM, he would spend a lot of his time in his room by himself just working things over in his head. He told Billboard that he acknowledged his last album ‘Faces’ was a little depressing, and wanted to put out something a bit more positive, reflecting his new mental state.“I’m not as depressed anymore. It wasn’t just in music, but I definitely was going through a drug problem and I think it was more my state of mind. He would later say that the depression that he felt was like a catalyst for his drug use.“I had a drug problem for a long time. The poor guy must of been at such an end that he didn’t think he’d be around for much longer. I don’t feel that way as much anymore.”Mac Miller was in such a dark place he thought that he’d die after releasing Faces. For many of us fans, I don’t think we really appreciated the extent of what Mac was going though at this point.During the documentary, Mac Miller explained he “hated being sober.”Whether he was half-joking or not, it seemed like it was a cry for help. During the same year, Mac took part in a short documentary with Fader where we go a bit more of an inside view of his drug abuse. He naturally found himself attracted to making music and loved every second of it. However, he acknowledged the fact that he needed something like that to happen, as if he needed a wake up call to reality.The thing about Mac Miller is this – he was a pretty normal guy, he grew up in a normal home with loving parents and had a huge love for music. He told Zane that he’d spent the last ten years of his life doing things without any real outcome that didn’t end up with him being fine. Even after his recent troubles, he would still explain in an interview with Zane Lowe that he was “doing okay” and his accident was just a “stupid mistake.”Mac Miller got the message out that he was just human, and made mistakes like anyone else form time to time. He would then split with girlfriend Ariana Grande and soon after end up with a DUI after crashing his G-Wagon and fleeing the scene. He was a sweet and sensitive guy and struggled with being in the limelight, always being judged, and always being talked about in one way or the other.Soon after his interview with Zane Lowe where he described his new project ‘Swimming’ and his past drug use, Mac Miller did an interview with Vulture Magazine. The truth is, although he seemed like he had everything he wanted, he still had underlining demons that caused him depression and ultimately caused him to get into hard drugs.
